A few days ahead of drawing this picture I had found a withered maple leaf in the snow. When I saw the many black dots and fragile parts of the leaf, I thought it would make a good black and white motif. To make the picture more interesting, I thought of the rosy maple moth, which I have depicted here in its 3 typical developmental stages of life.
